Self-Reflection for Literacy Narrative (The Eightfold Path)

Throughout writing this essay, I paid special attention to the effect Thailand had on me. Because of the content of the story, it’s genre is a narrative piece. The biggest point of attention was my “enlightenment,” which was the exigence that pushed me to write the story. With all the chaos of today’s political, economic, and social difficulties, a moment of knowledge, enlightenment, and relief is heavily needed. There needs to be moments of peace in order to get through the craziness of our day-to-day lives. I remembered my purpose in the text and especially in my life, which is to further immerse myself and others in the beauty of Buddhism and philosophy. These two principals stem all kinds of audiences. I aim to influence people of all kinds of backgrounds because I believe anyone could benefit from these sectors of thought. Stylistically, I believe I could’ve added more information to the chronological occurrences of my trip and how each affected me in it’s own personal way. I would have liked to incorporate more flashbacks and details on the events that I will always have ingrained in my mind. Throughout the struggle of empathizing with the suffering of the Thai people, I had hope for a brighter future, allowing me to put my life in perspective. This is the context of the story that I hope to build with the audience and my purpose. I attempted to persuade others to think differently, open their minds, and perhaps even look into Buddhism and philosophy.  I recalled how close-minded I was before the trip (the conflict) and how much I have grown and changed since then (the resolution). I grew an even deeper appreciation for literacy, Buddhism, and philosophy throughout reliving my experience, and I hope to do the same for the readers of my narrative essay. I believe that after writing this, I will relearn my values and principles, and further educate myself on the things I’m interested in, while persuading others to do the same.
